5 Ways That I Save Money

Enjoy this picture of my alien dog, Rafa…20% off at Target!

I’m not known for saving money, but when I do, it’s pretty darn good. Here are 5 ways that I consistently save:

  1. Thrift Stores: Although sifting through racks and racks of clothing can be a bit overwhelming, you can find some really great pieces for an absolute bargain. For example, last weekend I spent $15 on two Levi’s denim jackets…both in great condition, and a Longchamp leather crossbody purse for $5! What a score!

I save money most when I look for jeans, jackets/outwear, and designer purses at thrift stores because these can be great money savers. Normally a good pair of jeans will start at $40 (in my experience only), and since I know I can find an exact pair at a thrift store…there’s no turning back! With a little patience and motivation, you’ll always find second hand treasure!

  1. Drinking Water: I always try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, I use my Contigo water bottle everyday and fill it up wherever I go (home, work, gym, running errands, etc.). This BPA free/spill proof bottle has helped me drink more water daily since it’s bright yellow and super easy to carry around. You can’t miss it!
  2. Cash Back: Eventually my bank issued me a cash back credit card (not exactly sure when) and found out that I had $300 in cash back to redeem! So, instead of using my debit card, I charge everything on my credit card. That way, I get something back with every purchase. Whether it’s a few cents or a few dollars…every penny counts!
  3. Generic Products: Whenever I go to Target, Walgreens, CVS, the grocery, etc., I buy the generic versus the big name brand. It’s pretty much the same exact product without the “brand”. In my experience, the products I normally buy as generic (makeup remover, eye contact solution, vitamins, and other toiletries) save me about a dollar or two. However, I’ll remember to compare the ingredient lists on both, just to make sure how similar they really are.
  4. Budget: As obvious as this one may be, I budget with every paycheck and always try (try is the keyword here) to spend 25% of my bi-weekly income on food, transportation, bills, etc. The rest I put into savings. This has been a great motivator for me in order to save for vacation time, travel, and even maybe a home (I’m leaving it to fate on this one!)

Saving is never an easy task, but when you come to the realization that you could have more money in your pocket for the future and are becoming “smarter” about spending, it sort of becomes fun! (yea…right).

Thanks for reading!
